Steve Marshall - South Region Club Volunteer of the year 2016

BCDS Coach and all round great guy, Steve Marshall is awarded with his award and certificate from British Cycling as Club Volunteer of the year at the Good Friday Race at Castle combe last week.

Steve has been one of the founding members within the club taking on a number of roles within this time, initially Steve was the clubs welfare officer and whilst being at a number of our youth sessions began to take his coaching awards with particular interest in beginner velodrome sessions at Newport velodrome.

His enthusiasm for working with novice young riders saw him helping out at other club sessions and in particular with Newport Youth Velo where he is one of the clubs main coaches.

Steve continued to coach at the velodrome and can be found almost every Saturday at the club sessions over the past 10 years and has spent at least the last 5 years or more helping with athletes on the Disability Sport Wales introducing and supporting disabled athletes to get onto the track with a large number of these riders going on to represent GB.

With this in mind I asked the parents of our own Ollie Thomas what impact Steve had when Ollie took up cycling and was blown away by it – Read it here

Keen to remain close to supporting the sport in the South though Steve provided first aid to a huge number of events and then recently trained as a commissaire which has taken him away to a number of events in the area to allow racing to take place.

Our club and certainly the sport of Cycling in the South & Wales owe a great deal to dedication shown by Steve and wife Diane in sacrificing so much of their time to the sport in the region and we were extremely proud and honoured to put Steve's nomination forward earlier this year for the award which he won.

In typical fashion Steve was unwilling to accept the award in person at the Go-Ride conference typically though he felt his time was better used at the Velodrome coaching. So we arranged to make the presentation in front of a 140 strong Youth race and good 300 spectators with the vast majority of the riders knowing Steve personally it's testament to the impact he has had with them at a young age.

On behalf of the club, the South & Wales region’s and the sport as a whole we would like to say thank you & congratulations.
