BCDS, are now accredited to deliver Bikeability sessions to both Children & Adults to make them more confident & safer when using a bike on the open road.
Some of us will remember the old "Cycling Proficiency" from our school days but Bikability was re branded a few years ago & it's a very different course particularly the British Cycling program that we operate under.
There are essentially 3 levels of Bikeability which develop the riders skills & develop confidence for more complex road situations.
Level 1 -
Takes place in a traffic free enviorment & develops the core skills such as balance & braking, as well as showing the riders how to perform a bike safety check. depending on the rider these session can last as little as 1 hour and makes up the first part of all Level 2 courses.
At Level 2 riders are taken onto the roads to learn more about coping with traffic, junctions, overtaking etc. Unlike Cycling proficiency we look to set up mini courses on the road & once the techniques have been taught we encourage the riders to ride a mini circuit/ mini club run where we can asses them in a real world cycling journey.
This is delivered in very small groups or on a one to one basis in more complex cycling locations as your taught how to deal with things such as filter lane's, Large roundabouts etc. If you travel by bike across an area such as Bristol city centre then this is something you should really consider
